Mike and Christopher met through a mutual connection a few years back and became good friends. In 2020, Christopher decided to build an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) in his backyard and that peaked Mike's interest. After a few conversations, they both agreed to combine Mike's successful construction business background and Christopher's stellar workmanship and home building talents and start their own company along with Emily and Bernadette. That was the beginning of 
​McElroy/Bates Builders Inc. 

Mike has been in the construction industry since he was 16 years old. Starting off as a laborer, he worked up to an union journeyman. At 34 years old, Mike and a partner started a successful construction company that grew and eventually was acquired by another company in 2014. 

Christopher began his carpentry career at 23 years old as an apprentice and working himself up the ranks to the foreman/project manager positions. He has worked for some of the premier home builders in the Peninsula and South Bay area. ​
